Mansonet, the driver in this situation, explained her case to the jury this past November. Her statement explained how she found herself distracted when her sister-in-law sent her a text message. The message, which read “Cuban, American or Mexican? You pick,” was so distracting that Mansonet took her eyes off the road.
When she did, her vehicle rear-ended the car in front of her. The car in front of her was jolted forward due to the collision, which caused that car to slam into a 39-year-old who was traveling across the street. The pedestrian was rushed off to a local hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

The jury ruled to convict the driver of vehicular homicide. That means Mansonet could face up to ten years in prison due to her momentary lapse in judgment.
